For many tiny woodstove installations, heat shields are required behind the stovepipe to maintain safe distance to combustibles.
Stovepipe minimum distance to combustibles is 18” for single wall pipe, which can be reduced to 6” with an approved heat shield with a 1” air gap behind it. For insulated stovepipe, the minimum distance to combustibles is 2”.
A good way to measure these distances is with a stick cut to the length you need to maintain. For example, if you’re installing single wall stovepipe that needs a distance of 18” to combustibles, you would cut a stick to 18”. The 18” long stick should not be able to touch the stovepipe and combustible material at any part of the pipe.
There are many materials that can be used as a heat shield. If using sheet metal, the metal should be 26 gauge at a minimum. Aluminum and galvanized steel should be avoided. Cement board, metal roofing and porcelain tile is also a good option. With any heat shield, a 1” air gap between the shield and wall should be maintained.
